Covid is still a major part of our lives, and with all the time you are spending at home, chances are you have exhausted most of your go-to options for having fun in-doors. There are only so many shows on Netflix, Hulu, and Prime that one can binge on. There are only so many TikTok videos you can scroll through before being confronted with the reality that the majority of them are people just copying things they have seen other people do. There are only so many hours you can play video games before realizing that you are just doing the same thing over and over again. Well, DON’T WORRY! The truth is: there are tons of fun activities and things to do that you can try right now, if you are willing to put some effort in. Even if you’re not bored, you should still read this list:

1) Start writing a movie/series script: If you’ve been binge watching shows and movies and you are running low on material to watch, pick up a pen or pick up a laptop, and start creating your own contribution to entertainment. With the amount of crap that gets made into actual movies and tv shows these days, you can probably do better than most. Also, you know what you like to see. Are you into time travel? Zombie apocalypses? Disturbing dystopian tales like Black Mirror? Sit-coms with cheesy laugh tracks and romantic love-interest story-lines? Whatever it is that keeps you entertained, take a stab at making your own version of it. You’ll surprise yourself with your own imagination, and maybe you can get a Netflix deal.

2) Create your own escape room experience/board game: This is something you can put together yourself and then try with other people. It’s actually a really cool thing to do for someone’s birthday or even for your significant other on Valentine’s day. You pick the theme, you decide the rules, and then you see how it plays out. There are guides on the internet on how to create your own escape room experience, or your own board game that you can use as a template. Play with friends and family, play sober or maybe turn it into a drinking game. Whatever floats your boat. Give Monopoly a run for its money!

3) Learn a new language: There is a lot of material out there about the benefits of learning another language. You can enjoy movies, shows, songs and cultures from other countries. You can also use your newly acquired skills to flirt with foreign strangers. There is a plethora of free resources out there that you can use to learn a different language. To get started, you can check out language lessons on YouTube, and Duolingo is also an excellent app for learning a language on the cheap. While figuring out which language to learn, maybe you can also plan your dream vacation.

4) Learn a new skill: Maybe you want to learn a new instrument. Maybe you want to learn how to cook French cuisine. Maybe you want to study a subject that you wish you had studied in high school or college. All of those are great options and there are loads of resources you can use to learn a new skill on the web. Moreover, you can actually help your career or change careers by learning about a different field and earning a certification in it. Edx, Coursera, and Udemy are good resources to check out. Who wouldn’t like to pursue their dream job or qualify for a raise?

5) Read a book: I know, super nerdy right? WRONG! No matter what you are interested in, you can find a book that will be pertinent to your interests, and will expand your horizons. I’m not going to go on about it. I’m not your parents. You know you should be reading more, it’s good for you

6) Find or Create a Podcast: Podcasts are becoming increasingly popular these days. They exist for all kinds of niche interests, and they can be incredibly informative and entertaining. They are also pretty easy to create, which means you can develop your own podcast if you find that there isn’t one out there for your specific area of expertise or passion. There are also plenty of guides out there for how to create your own podcast, so there is no shortage of guidance on the topic. Run it by yourself, or produce it with a friend. Invite friends and family to speak on your show. Whatever you want. If Joe Rogan can do it, I’m sure you can too.

7) Email or write to someone from your past: I’m not talking about drunk dialing an ex here. Think about people who you were close to who you have lost touch with. Think about old friends and extended family, and shoot them a message. Say something that you never had the chance to say, but you want them to know, especially if it is a kind word or sentiment. People love to be surprised by a nice message from someone they have not thought of in a while. The pandemic sucks because it places limits on our normal social lives, but you can treat this as an opportunity to expand your social life by rekindling positive relationships.

8) Volunteer Remotely: If there is a cause that is close to your heart and you have some spare time, go online and look up remote volunteering opportunities. There are plenty of non-profit organizations and issue groups that would be happy to receive extra help for free. Indeed and Linkedin are good places to start. Even if you don’t see any volunteer positions advertised, you can just write to someone in the organization and ask if there are any ways you can support their efforts remotely. You can add the experience to your resume as well. If you see a problem, be a part of the solution.

Always remember: Life is too damn short to allow yourself to put up with being bored constantly. Use your time to the fullest.
