While many people are waiting for their Covid vaccine, experts are still cautioning the public that day to day life is not going to change much for the general population, even after getting vaccinated. That means keeping your mask on, continuing to avoid contact with large groups, and (you guessed it) more time trying to entertain yourself at home. Don’t worry! Even after you try the tips we have already recommended, there are still loads of ways to have fun and be creative whiles staying safe. Sit back, relax, and check out these awesome and fun activities you should try:
1) Family Reunion on Zoom: Organize a family reunion with as many family members as you can gather. Zoom calls allow for 100 participants on a single meeting. See if you can actually reach that limit. If big gatherings aren’t your thing, maybe just organize a small meeting between immediate family or friends. You can also try playing a game over zoom. Introduce grandma to Cards Against Humanity. Whatever interests you. Everyone is feeling some kind of isolation, so activities that bring people together (even if they are not in the same room) really help everyone to maintain their wellness.
2) Go on a Virtual Tour: Hop on your laptop or computer and try to find a virtual tour that might interest you. There are a bunch of museums that have on-line tours of their collections. You can also do virtual tours of historical sites. You can even go on virtual tours of natural wonders. NASA even has a bunch of virtual tours you can check out if you’re just generally bored of Earth.
3) Discover a mystery: There are all kinds of mysterious events and unanswered questions out there. Research some unsolved mysteries, pick one that interests you, and then try to solve it. The on-line community has proven to be a powerful force for obtaining answers to difficult questions, and has even been influential in solving cold cases. By contributing your new and fresh perspective on a murky issue, you might come up with a lead that no one has considered yet.
4) Do a personality test: Personality tests are great time-killers. There are plenty of free personality tests on-line and some of them are very long and in depth. You should keep in mind that just because you score a particular result on a personality test, that does not mean that the result is 100% accurate, and you should be skeptical of anyone who suggests that you cannot do something because of your personality type. However, they can be fun tools that help you engage in introspection, and maybe can lead you to some suggestions about alternate career paths or interests. Give it a try, but take your results with a grain of salt.
5) Go through your closet/storage: You don’t have to go full Marie Condo, but you would be amazed at how much stuff you can accumulate, especially if you have been living in the same place for a year or two. Go through items that you have stowed away, and decide what you want to do with them. Maybe you have some clothes you can donate, or upcycle. Maybe you have documents that should be organized that will help prepare you for tax season. Maybe you have some old photos you can put together into a photo album or art project. Look at the things you usually ignore, they are great resources for creative activities.
6) Create your own family tree: Every family and person has a story, and you can discover yours by interviewing family members, and researching online. There are some great genealogy websites out there, and you might be surprised by some of the documents and artifacts you can actually find on-line. If you have no clue about your family history, you can start by looking into the origin of your last name. You might have extended family who you have never met. Maybe you are related to royalty and you didn’t even know it. Start digging!
7) Learn sleight of hand: For you magic fans out there, sleight of hand is all about learning and developing skills that give you the dexterity to make things like cards, coins, and pens disappear at will. There are plenty of websites with free tips and tricks you can practice. Maybe after the pandemic, you will be able to surprise and amuse your friends with your newly learned magic skills. Word of advice though: If you borrow $5 from a friend to make disappear, make sure you can make it reappear.
8) Check out live performances and plays on-line: Everyone talks about streaming movies and tv shows, but what about plays? Stage acting can be a powerful medium of art, and there are all sorts of resources on-line where you can experience the theater. A great service is Marquee Tv. You can start a free trial and gain access to some amazing plays and performances. If you are a big Shakespeare buff, check out The Show Must Go Online. You won’t regret it.
I like this ideas, especially doing family tree!
